Once famous for its shark fishing, Keem Bay on Achill Island has only one land access — the skinny road from Dooagh. It hugs the cliffside as it descends to the beach. Desolate and stark; nothing on the beach but a house with a dark door. With a long history in art and religion, doors and doorways are a symbol of transition from one reality to the next. But it is the darkness of this door that I like most – mysterious, taboo, sexy – and inviting.
